We at Carney will be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day by wearing Crazy Socks. The reason we are wearing Crazy Socks on World Down Syndrome Day to remind ourselves that things that are different are still beautiful and wonderful.
21 Facts About Kids with Down Syndrome
1) We have 46 chromosomes, people with DS have 47
2) Chromosomes determine everything about us, our hair color, eye color, facial features, muscle strength, etc.
3) Kids with DS have a triplication (3) of chromosome number 21 (thus 3/21 being World Down Syndrome Day)
4) DS is not contagious, we cannot catch it
5) Having an extra chromosome makes it more difficult to move and talk
6) Kids with an extra chromosome have a lower muscle tone
7) This lower muscle tone also affects the muscles in the mouth, making it more difficult for them to speak
8) Kids with DS have a harder time remembering things
9) Kids with DS can learn just like us, but just need more time and help
