21 Day Challenge 21 Day Challenge
New Bedford Public Schools is honored to have the YWCA SouthCoast in partnership to host a 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge for our staff. Communities across the country have participated in 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenges to broaden the discussion and understanding of racial equity and issues of social justice. In practice, the challenge is 21 days of self-directed learning through daily emails with content on education, race, power, privilege, and leadership. Be part of the community conversation to inspire. It only takes 21 days to develop a new habit. It takes leaders to set the path. Attached you will find a flyer with more information. Message from principal Reidy

Message from principal
Maria D. Reidy is in her 3rd year as principal of Sgt. William H. Carney Academy Elementary School. I wanted to be a teacher since I was in the second grade. I loved playing school with my siblings and I remember begging my parents for a chalk board. I attended Phillips Avenue School in New Bedford and had an amazing second grade teacher, Mrs. Gifford. She made me feel as if I could do anything and that year I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up -- A teacher! I attended Normandin Middle School and then off to New Bedford High School. I continued my education by attending Bristol Community College, Bridgewater State College, and Cambridge College to be an educator.

Being a principal is a challenge at times, but I can’t imagine doing it anywhere else. My Carney Families mean the world to me. My favorite part of my day is seeing my students learn in their classrooms. They bring such joy to my life and make me remember why I went into this profession. I am who I am because of them. To all my former students, thank you for being part of who I am today. You taught me many lessons throughout my years as a teacher in New Bedford. Our goal at Carney Academy is to create that connection I had with Mrs. Gifford here with our students.
