Arrival Plan
Here is our Arrival & Dismissal Plan to ensure students are entering and exiting the building in the most safe and efficient way. Please look at the graphics above and see where your student will be entering to prepare for the mornings. And to be upfront, parking is difficult. So please make sure you are keeping all our kids safe during morning arrival. Students in our Autism Program and Substantially Separate classrooms are to arrive and dismiss at the main office. A staff member will be present at the entrance to meet the parent and call for a faculty member to walk your student to class.
Dismissal is at 2:25 pm. Pre-K will be dismissed by their teachers from each classroom on Elm Street. All other walkers & parent pick up will be dismissed on the corner of Elm St & Cottage St. Walkers are limited to students in grades 4&5 who are given permission to walk home from school by themselves. Friendly Reminders for Parents/Guardians from NBPS Health Services

Please keep your child home from school and contact your school nurse if:

  • Your child or someone in the household is being tested or has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Your child or someone in the household has been identified as a close contact to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. A close contact is defined as being within 6 feet of an individual for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours while the person was infectious. The infectious period begins two days before symptoms.

  • Your child or someone in the household is ill with any COVID-like symptoms (fever 100.0 or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle or body aches, fatigue, headache, new loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose).

Travel: To High or Low Risk Areas

Your child or someone in the household has traveled outside of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts travel advisory requires ALL individuals entering Massachusetts, including residents, to quarantine for ten days or produce a negative PCR COVID-19 test result that has been administered up to 72-hours before your arrival in Massachusetts. If not obtained before entry to Massachusetts, testing may be completed after arrival. However, all such arriving travelers must immediately begin the 10-day quarantine until a negative test result has been received.

**If the adult has received their vaccines, they do not need to quarantine, nor does the child under ten. However, Children older than ten must be tested or quarantine.

For children under 10, traveling with an adult from their household, testing is not required. Children under ten should use the same quarantine requirement and testing options completed by the household adult they accompanied for travel.

If the accompanying adult chooses to quarantine, the child must quarantine. If the accompanying adult decides to obtain a test, the child and adult must quarantine until the adult’s negative test result is received.

However, you need to have received both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines and be greater than 14 days since the 2nd dose. You would follow the same guidelines if you received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. You will also need to provide proof of vaccination.

Message from principal Reidy

Message from principal
Maria D. Reidy is in her 3rd year as principal of Sgt. William H. Carney Academy Elementary School. I wanted to be a teacher since I was in the second grade. I loved playing school with my siblings and I remember begging my parents for a chalk board. I attended Phillips Avenue School in New Bedford and had an amazing second grade teacher, Mrs. Gifford. She made me feel as if I could do anything and that year I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up -- A teacher! I attended Normandin Middle School and then off to New Bedford High School. I continued my education by attending Bristol Community College, Bridgewater State College, and Cambridge College to be an educator.

Being a principal is a challenge at times, but I can’t imagine doing it anywhere else. My Carney Families mean the world to me. My favorite part of my day is seeing my students learn in their classrooms. They bring such joy to my life and make me remember why I went into this profession. I am who I am because of them. To all my former students, thank you for being part of who I am today. You taught me many lessons throughout my years as a teacher in New Bedford. Our goal at Carney Academy is to create that connection I had with Mrs. Gifford here with our students.
